Museums of the city

Natural History Museum of Valparaiso: Located in 1546 “Condell” Street, inside the old Lyon Palace. Founded by Eduardo de la Barra in 1878, it is part of the DIBAM (Direction of Libraries, Files and Museums) from 1929. Declared National Monument in 1979 for its architectonic value.

It has 110.000 pieces and four different collections.

Open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from:
10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 – 18:00 hours
Sundays and holidays from:
10:00 – 14:00 hours.


Municipal Museum of Arts: Located in “Paseo Yugoslavo”, inside the old “Baburizza” Palace. Was inaugurated on July 8th 1971.

It has collections of Chilean painters like: Camilo Mori, Pedro Lira and Juan Francisco González as well as European painters like Rousseau and Boudin.



Naval and Maritime Museum: Located in “Paseo 21 de Mayo”. Here it is possible to find relics and testimonies of the evolution of the Chilean Navy from 1818 until 1880.

Lukas’s House Museum and Belvedere:Located in 448 “Paseo Gervasoni”. In honour to Renzo Pecchenino “Lukas”, who was a draftsman that reflected Valparaiso´s inhabitants identity and customs.

10:30 – 14:00 hours / 15:00 – 18:00 hours.


Lord Cochrane Museum

Museum of the Sea Lord Thomas Cochrane: Situatedo in 195 “Merlet” Street in “Cordillera” Hill. The old house was built at the edge of the cliff and has a beautiful view. It has pieces related with the navy




Open Sky Museum

Open Sky Museum

An innovative initiative result of the work between the City Council and the Catholic University of Valparaiso. It is a street museum, where everybody can see art.

Inaugurated in 1992 It shows the work of different artists that paint the walls of traditional houses at “Bellavista” Hill.

These paintings were done by art students of the Catholic University of Valparaiso. Original sketches from famous painters like Roser Bru, Gracia Barros, Matilde Pérez, Roberto Matta, Nemesio Antúnez, Augusto Barcia, José Balmes, Mario Toral, etc.

In the city there are many art galleries, cultural centres and exhibition rooms, some of them are:



Municipal Gallery of Art “Valparaiso”: Located in 1550 “Condell” Street, inside Lyon Palace, at the basement.

It is open between:

Tuesdays to Sundays:
10:00 – 19:00 hours.
The admission is free.


Cultural Centre Ex- Jail: Located at the ex-jail of Valparaiso.

It is a cultural and art centre. There are puppets, circus activities, night recitals, etc.

It is a nice place to have fun and entertainment



There are other places where you can have rotary exhibitions for example: Exhibition Room at the National Congress Hall in “Pedro Montt” Avenue s/n.

Room “El Farol” at the University of Valparaiso in 1113 “Blanco” Street, shows artistic exhibitions.s.



"El Café Arte Mirador" located in “Paseo 21 de Mayo”, where you can eat and appreciate art. Open from Mondays to Sundays between 14:00 – 23:00 hours.



Orgánica Exhibitors situated in 664 “Abtao” Street, with an exhibition of Valparaiso’s painters and also crafts of different Chilean aborigines.



Art Room Wenteche located in 523 “Templeman” Street, in “Concepción” Hill. Here you can buy paintings, silver, wool and leather crafts.
